Thoughts

I remember with such fondness my time at F&S as an 18 year old in my first job! Clifford taught me so much about work and life - all that I appreciate still to this day. My love of music hasn't left me but the ability to play the violin has! With love, Kim

Although we are related, the first time I met Clifford was in Prague when he came to visit us. I think it was in early 1968 and I hadn't understood a word he said despite, or perhaps because of, private English lessons. Later that year when we left Czechoslovakia he came to liberate us from forever circling Marble Arch and we followed his car to South Woodford, where we imposed upon the family's hospitality for three months. As my English had not progressed, he showed me how to read base clef so I could play the piano. However, I was so bad at it, he quickly got one of his fellow musicians to lend me a guitar, for which I was very grateful! As my English progressed, he explained the arcane principles of cryptic crosswords, unique to England, possibly due to the intrinsic ambiguity of the language. Most of all I remember Clifford as a witty bon viveur, fond of speaking in epigrams. My favourite is : 'A sausage is an animal inside out'. I really miss him.

I just want to add a few of my own memories of Cliff. When I met him in September 1968, arriving with family in this country as homeless emigrants, fleeing from communist Czechoslovakia after the invasion of Russia and their allies at that time, Cliff with his wife Ruth gave us our first home in Britain. Both of them introduced us to the intricacies of life on these shores and gave us a secure foothold and start in what was for us a foreign country. Being with Cliff, a passionate musician and active member of an orchestra, and Ruth his wife, a generous hostess of it, was a memorable experience for us. When sharing their home, we spent a most harmonious time as part of an extended family. Speaking for the rest of my family, Cliff will always be remembered with love and gratitude. Love from Hana
